What Makes a Good Student and an Inspirational Teacher

Sami Bsoul, PhD

I could write long and endless texts about what makes a good student and who qualifies as a good teacher.

But I won't.

Instead, I'll quote something brief, concise, that I deeply believe in and that says it all:

לֹא הַבַּיְשָׁן לָמֵד, וְלֹא הַקַּפְּדָן מְלַמֵּד (Source: Avot Chapter 2 Mishnah 5)

"The shy cannot learn, and the impatient cannot teach." – Ethics of the Fathers, Chapter 2, Mishnah 5

This simple yet profound statement captures the essence of both the

student and the teacher.

A Good Student:

A good student is not afraid to ask questions, because let’s be honest, if you’re not asking questions, you might just be daydreaming about lunch. Learning requires curiosity and the courage to admit when something is as clear as mud. If you're genuinely engaged in the learning process, whether it's a language, science, or figuring out how to fold a fitted sheet, it's impossible to go through several lessons without at least one question popping into your head.

Take language learning, for example: If after three lessons you haven’t asked your teacher a single question, it’s a sign you might either be too shy or that your mind has wandered off to a tropical island where people speak fluent piña colada. By the next class, you should come armed with at least one question, because, remember, curiosity didn’t just kill the cat; it also helped it master English grammar.

Learning isn’t just about passively receiving information like a sponge; it's about actively engaging with it, like a sponge in a water balloon fight, seeking deeper understanding while avoiding a soggy disaster. Asking questions shows that you’re engaged, critically thinking, and striving for mastery, like a knight questing for the Holy Grail, but with more verb conjugations and fewer dragons.

A student who feels shy or intimidated, who hesitates to ask for help or clarification, will struggle to genuinely engage in the learning process. So, throw your shyness out the window! To learn, you need an open mind, a willingness to challenge your own assumptions, and a desire to explore things in depth, even if it means grappling with the mysteries of why English spelling makes no sense. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help; even superheroes have sidekicks!

A good teacher:

On the other hand, a good teacher is like a trusty compass, demonstrating understanding and patience. Impatience? That just creates a fear factor that even the bravest students dread, making it tough for them to feel comfortable exploring ideas or making mistakes. A good teacher is patient and has a deep, complex understanding of their subject. For example, a language teacher who teaches what I call “dryly,” focusing solely on vocabulary and grammar, think of a desert, without connecting students to the soul of the language is missing the oasis of education.

In my opinion, this type of teaching reduces the subject to mere memorization, which is about as exciting as watching paint dry. Language is not just about words, it's spirituality and expression that allows the student to truly savor what they are learning, like enjoying a delicious meal rather than chewing on cardboard. Whatever the reasons students have for learning a particular language, it’s the teacher’s job to guide them into the inner world of the language and provide them with even more reasons to love it.

A teacher who lacks a deep appreciation for the spirit and intricate details of the language will deliver dry, uninspiring lessons. They may “only teach” words but fail to convey the richness and beauty of the language, like serving a gourmet meal without any spices. Great teaching involves bringing the subject to life, helping students connect with it on a deeper level, and making learning enjoyable and meaningful.

And certainly, a good teacher does not pressure their students or belittle them for not knowing something. Instead, they guide them, allowing each student to progress at their own pace, like a leisurely stroll through a beautiful park, while providing encouragement and support along their journey.
