Psalm 102
The Ancient Playbook for Modern Burnout
◆

Burnout. Anxiety. The feeling of being discarded. The sense that you're watching your own life from a distance. These aren't modern problems — they're ancient ones. Psalm 102 describes them with terrifying precision. And then it offers something unexpected.

Written over 2,500 years ago, it's titled "A prayer of the afflicted, when he is overwhelmed and pours out his complaint before the LORD."

LISTEN

"My days are consumed like smoke, and my bones are burned like a hearth."
"My heart is stricken and withered like grass, so that I forget to eat my bread."
"I am like a desert owl... a sparrow alone on a rooftop."

That's not poetry. That's a clinical description of depression, burnout, and grief. He can't eat. He can't sleep. He feels invisible, isolated, forgotten.

But then the psalm does something unexpected.
"But You, O LORD, sit enthroned forever."

Everything around him is fading. His body. His reputation. His days. But God isn't.

"He looked down from His holy height... to hear the groaning of the prisoner, to set free those who are condemned to death."

The God who laid the foundations of the earth is paying attention to the groaning of the prisoner. He's not distant. He hears.

THE HEBREW, LINE BY LINE

Read it aloud with the small gray line under each verse.

Adonai shim'ah tefillati, ve-shav'ati eleicha tavo.
Al taster paneicha mimeni, be-yom tzar li; hateh elai oznecha, be-yom ekra maher aneni.
Ki chalu ve-ashan yamai, ve-atzmotai ke-mo ked nicharu.
Hukah cha-eshev va-yivash libi, ki shachachti me'achol lachmi.
Mi-kol anachti davkah atzmi li-vesari.

Damiti li-k'at midbar, hayiti ke-chos choravot.
Shakadti va-ehyeh ke-tzipor boded al gag.
Kol ha-yom cherfuni oyvai, meholalai bi nishba'u.
Ki efer ka-lechem achalti, ve-shikuvai bi-vchi masachti.
Mi-pnei za'amcha ve-kitzpecha, ki nesatani va-tashlicheni.
Yamai ke-tzel natu'i, va-ani ka-eshev ivash.
Ve-atah Adonai le-olam teshev, ve-zichrecha le-dor va-dor.

Ki ratzu avadeicha et avaneiha, ve-et afarah yechonenu.
Ve-yir'u goyim et shem Adonai, ve-chol malchei ha-aretz et kevodecha.
Ki vanah Adonai Tziyon, nir'ah bi-chvodo.
Tikatev zot le-dor acharon, ve-am nivra yehalel Yah.
Lishmo'a enkat asir, le-fate'ach bnei temutah.
Le-saper be-Tziyon shem Adonai, u-tehilato bi-Yerushalayim.
Be-hikavetz amim yachdav, u-mamlachot la-avod et Adonai.
Inah va-derech kochi, kitzar yamai.
Omar eli, al ta'aleni ba-chatzi yamai; be-dor dorim shnotecha.
Lefanim ha-aretz yasadta, u-ma'aseh yadeicha shamayim.
Hemah yovedu ve-atah ta'amod, ve-chulam ka-beged yivlu; ka-levush tachlifem ve-yachalofu.
Ve-atah hu, u-shnotecha lo yitamu.
Bnei avadeicha yishkonu, ve-zar'am lefaneicha yikon.
◆He had no words left. Only a groan. And the groan reached further than the stars.
