Psalm 1 | The Gateway to True Happiness | תהלים פרק א | Sami Bsoul

Sami Bsoul, PhD

Psalm 1. Ashrei HaIsh: The Gateway to True Happiness The Book of Tehillim (Psalms) opens with a single, powerful word: Ashrei, “Happy is the man.”

This is not a request for blessing; it is a declaration. The psalm then paints two contrasting portraits: a tree planted by streams of water, and chaff blown away by the wind.

The tree represents a person whose life is rooted in joyful meditation on God’s word, producing fruit in its season.

The chaff represents the wicked, weightless, rootless, and ultimately scattered.

The sages noted a progression in the first verse: one first walks in the counsel of the wicked, then stands in the path of sinners, and finally sits in the company of scoffers.

Rashi explains that the righteous person avoids the very first step, never standing, never sitting, never taking root in a harmful environment.

The Midrash identifies the “counsel of the wicked” with Doeg and Ahithophel, infamous advisors who brought disaster.

Psalm 1 is the gateway to the entire Psalter. It sets the framework for every prayer, every lament, every song of praise that follows: the ultimate orientation of a human life is the “way of the righteous,” which God watches over, while the “way of the wicked” will perish.

When you sing this psalm, you are not just reciting ancient poetry. You are declaring the secret of authentic, enduring happiness, a life planted by the waters of Torah, yielding fruit in its season, whose leaf never withers. #Psalm1 #SoulOfTorah
