descent. The singer acknowledges that if God kept a record of sins, no one could stand. Yet with God is forgiveness, so that we may be revered. The most powerful image: "My soul waits for the Lord, more than watchmen wait for the morning." The night watchman longs for first light, not knowing if it will come, but certain it will. That is the essence of Jewish hope: not certainty of ease, but certainty that dawn always follows darkness. When you sing this psalm, you are not pretending to be perfect.
