Beneath

We Remember the Same Life Differently

Two people. One past. Different pieces.

Sami Bsoul, PhD · 3 min read

There are moments in a shared life that seem too ordinary to remember.

Someone leaves a light on. Someone knows how you take your coffee without asking. A familiar voice calls from another room. You tell the same story for the hundredth time, and the other person still laughs at the same part.

You don’t take photographs of these moments. You don’t write them down. You assume they’ll stay with you.

And then, years later, one of you remembers something the other doesn’t.

Not because the moment was unimportant. Not because the love was missing. Sometimes two people simply carry different pieces of the same past.

One remembers the words. The other remembers the silence that followed.

One remembers a beautiful evening. The other remembers going home with something left unsaid.

One remembers being protected. The other remembers being asked to trust.

Neither has necessarily forgotten the truth. They have just been living with different versions of it.

That’s one of the strange things about loving someone for a long time. You begin to think of your memories as shared property. The holidays, the arguments, the first home, the difficult years, the little private jokes. You say remember when? as though the answer must be the same for both of you.

But it isn’t always.

And what happens when the person beside you remembers the event but not what it meant? When they know your name but can’t reach the feeling attached to it? When you can still recall every detail, but the person who shared those details with you can no longer find their way back?

You can tell the story again. You can show the photographs. You can repeat the words exactly as they were spoken.

But you cannot make someone feel a memory simply because you remember it for them.

That is a lonely kind of distance. The person is still there. You can touch their hand. Hear them breathe. Sit beside them in the same room. Yet something that once belonged to both of you now lives in only one person’s mind.

And memory is not always gentle to the person who keeps it.

Sometimes remembering means carrying the beautiful parts. Sometimes it means carrying the things you wish had never happened. The promises, the mistakes, the moments you understood too late. You don’t get to keep one version and discard the other. They come together.

Perhaps this is why we return to old photographs, messages, letters and stories. We are not only trying to remember what happened. We are trying to understand what it meant. We look again because time has changed the person doing the looking.

The photograph hasn’t changed.

The message is still there.

The words are exactly where you left them.

But you are not the same person who first read them.

And sometimes, when you finally understand what a moment meant, you realise that the hardest part was never remembering it.

It was learning to live with what you now know.

What if the person you love most forgot you while you are still standing right in front of them?

LOST IN MEMORY is a gripping science-fiction thriller about love, memory and the terrifying cost of keeping someone alive when the person they are begins to disappear.

In a near-future world, a neurological virus steals memories of the people we love most. Brilliant scientist Dr. Gideon Holt and Nora, the woman closest to him, isolate themselves inside a high-tech bunker. When Gideon becomes infected, the countdown begins. They have exactly seventy-two hours before the virus takes away the memories that connect him to the people he loves, and begins destroying the parts of his mind that make him who he is.

Their only hope is a dangerous, unapproved cure. With time running out, they begin recording their history, trying to preserve the details that made their lives theirs. The small things. The private jokes. The moments neither thought they would ever need to remember for each other.

But the virus takes more than…

The lights are warm. The doors are open. And people arrive carrying stories they cannot tell anywhere else.
